Algebra II Recipe: Dividing Polynomials
Steps for Dividing

  1. Set up long division.
  2. If the dividend or divisor has missing terms, insert that term with a coefficient of zero.
  3. Divide the first term of the divisor into the first term of the dividend.
  4. Put the answer from #3 above its like term in the dividend.
  5. Multiply down.
  6. Subtract, bring down the next term, and repeat steps 3-6.
  7. If there is a remainder, put the remainder over the divisor and add it to the quotient.
ExamplesExamples:
(x3 + 2x2 - 6x - 9) ÷ (x + 3)
(x3 + 2x2 - 6x - 9) ÷ (x - 2)
(2x4 + 3x3 + 5x - 1) ÷ (x2 - 2x + 2)
